The Boundary Waters

A first wedding anniversary gift has to be related to paper. I gave my wife a map and a guidebook about the Boundary Waters. After that, we started to plan our adventure. There are no high mountains in Minnesota like in Taiwan that I can hike. However, there are thousands of lakes in Minnesota that I can canoe! I feel like if I have not canoed in Minnesota, I have never lived in Minnesota. The Boundary Waters is a part of the National Wilderness Preservation System, so we had to apply for a permit to go. When we canoed here, it was really like hiking in Taiwan’s mountains. We didn’t see many people. We had to do everything by ourselves, including checking our location, finding the route, paddling, portaging, cooking and setting up the tent. When we went into the natural world, we temporarily left behind our cell phones and computers.

Ready to GO!(轉自白東穎 臉書專頁)

When we were planing this trip, Meggan asked me what level of difficulty route we should choose. I didn’t even think and said the easiest one. The reason was very simple, we both have never been to the Boundary Waters and no one would lead us when we got there. In spite of there being lots of information in the book and online, and my coworkers at REI also told me lots of information, it can still be dangerous. We always hope we can go on adventures with happiness and come home safe. There was no doubt taking the easiest route was the right choice, which we discussed on the way. Our shoulders were almost cramping when we canoed so long! We also needed to portage the canoe and all of our gear by ourselves. I think that our canoe might have weighed 80 lb. I could accept the short portage around 10 minutes to walk, but sometimes we needed to portage 45-50 minutes. That really challenged me!

I don't like portage!(轉自白東穎 臉書專頁)

Although this trip was exhausting, we saw so much beautiful scenery. The large lakes were so big you couldn’t see the end. The small creeks twisted and turned. The sunrises and sunsets were incredible. It touched my heart.

The small creek had many sharp turns. It was important to control our paddling as the creek snaked around, otherwise we would end up stuck in the weeds! After this creek, our paddling improved a lot.

After we left the small creek, we came to another lake. No motor boats were allowed on this lake, we only saw one other canoe. It was like we were in a different world.
The first two campsites we paddled to on this lake were uninhabitable, but the third one was perfect.

When we got caught in a sudden downpour, we had to rush to the shore for safety.

It was not always sunny with no wind on our way. We met heavy rain, forcing us to go to shore and met big waves to force us back. However, after all the hard work, there was always beautiful scenery waiting for us.

Every time I go to a new place on an adventure, there are always some surprises and new exploration. After moving to U.S for one year, this trip allowed me to more deeply know about and love the state I live in. Time is flying, I moved to MN one year ago. Sometimes life is hard, and sometimes life is also happy. I like my lifestyle and I enjoy the changes. I know that there are many challenges in the future. I always try my best to face the challenges and grow with them. Whether life passes with happiness or sadness depend on how you choose. I always try to choose happiness with my life, to love my life.
